If you are in Alicante during December be sure to celebrate with the locals with this festival that celebrates with a variety of religious, historic, and carnival events.
All of Spain celebrates this festival but each area of Spain has a different way of celebrating. If you are in Alicante you will find that you are woken by the dianas before you head towards the center of town to wait for the arrival of the Moors and the Christians. Local people will be dressed in period costumes as they re-enact the battles that took place between the Moors and the Christians.
What follows is a re-enactment of battles and dialogue between the Moors and the Christians, acted out by various companies (filaes). The festivities end with the informal and comic retreats. Each filae has its retreat, the kábila for the Moors and the cuartel for the Christians, where a great deal of eating and drinking takes place.
The festival takes place at different times throughout the year and ending on December 6 th when the huge procession described above takes place.
