During this festival the local people pay homage to Saint John by taking part in celebrations of the summer solstice.
The Fogueres de Sant Joan is Alicante's main fiesta, paying homage to Saint John and celebrating the summer solstice with bonfires and fireworks.
Dating back hundreds of years, the origins of the celebrations have been lost in time, but today's activities date back to 1928.
The festivities begin with the pregón (proclamation). Huge satirical artistic monuments of papier mâché and wood are set up all over the city on the night (plantà) of the 20 June.
Four days later, on the Nit del Foc, they are burned in what is known as the cremà, following a huge firework display at St Barbara Castle that can be seen all over the city.In addition to around 200 bonfires and fireworks, there is a huge programme of events all over the city, with parades, processions, bullfights, musical performances, a fireworks competition and sports events, among others
